Split expenses

Split an expense across multiple accounts and dimensions.

With the Split feature, you can divide a single expense across multiple general ledger accounts, cost centres, projects, or other dimensions.

This allows you to allocate expenses accurately without creating multiple separate transactions.

How to split an expense

You can split an expense both on the Mynt website and in the Mynt app.

On the Mynt website

  1. Log in to the Mynt website.

  2. Open the expense you want to split.

  3. Scroll down to Advanced accounting.

  4. Click Split.

  5. Add the parts you want to create and specify:

    • General ledger account

    • Amount

    • Any dimensions, such as a cost centre or project

  6. To create additional parts, click Add part.

There is no limit to the number of parts you can create.

In the Mynt app

  1. Go to the To-do tab and open the expense you want to split.

  2. Tap Split.

  3. Add the parts you want to create.

  4. To create additional parts, tap Add part.

What happens when exporting to your accounting system?

For customers with a direct integration between Mynt and their accounting system, a single voucher is created when a split expense is exported.

Each part of the expense is exported as a separate row within the voucher, while shared information such as:

  • Date

  • Comment

  • Participants

  • Merchant name

is included across all rows.

This allows the entire expense to be recorded as a single voucher while each part is allocated to the correct general ledger account and any applicable dimensions.

Common use cases

Split expenses are useful when a single expense needs to be allocated across multiple general ledger accounts or dimensions.

A common example is a restaurant bill that includes both:

  • Client entertainment

  • Employee meals

The client entertainment portion can be coded to a representation account with the correct VAT treatment, while the employee meal portion can be coded to a staff cost account.

You can also use split expenses to allocate costs across multiple cost centres, projects, or other dimensions.

Good to know

  • Splitting an expense only affects how the expense is allocated in your accounting system. It does not change the total expense amount.

  • Before saving, make sure the sum of all parts equals the total expense amount.
